Early Season:  The Early Season is wonderful time to visit Double P Ranch.  The longer days and warm temperatures of September appeals to guests who seek a full South Dakota outdoor experience.  It’s a perfect time to introduce a beginning sportsman to the outdoors beginners to the outdoors.  Mourning doves and Superior Canada geese begin their annual fall migrations. Cooling evening temperatures promote lake turn over, waking up walleye and perch bite from their summer doldrums.  It’s a perfect time to introduce a.

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting: Pheasant hunting during the September season occurs on the private preserve area of the ranch.  Double P Ranch has arguably some of the finest habitat of any lodge in South Dakota.  We hunt every type of pheasant cover.  Our guests are allowed to shoot four birds per day, including one partridge, with the option of shooting additional birds.

South Dakota Dove Hunting:  Dove hunting has become more and more popular at Double P Ranch.   Witnessing the seemingly endless evening migrations of birds against the backdrop of a majestic South Dakota sunset while waiting for doves to acrobatically dart across the prairie sky is a perfect way to finish your day.   Our combination of fields of millet, watering holes, and trees attract both local migrating doves to the ranch. Please let us know if you ahead of your visit if you would like to hunt them.

South Dakota Canada Goose Hunting:  Superior (Giant) Canada geese are hunted at this time.  These are the largest Canada goose subspecies, the adults average 10-14 lbs.  The early season limit has been as many as 15 per day.  Although there are days when limits or near limits are shot, a more reasonable expectation is to shoot 2-4 per hunter on a good morning in the field.

*We encourage our guests to apply for the goose license online a minimum of two weeks prior to your trip.  This allows the licenses time to be mailed to the recipient.   It is possible to purchase licenses in South Dakota but requires an 80 mile round trip to town.

Complementary South Dakota Walleye Fishing:  Double P Ranch is fortunate to be just minutes away from several excellent prairie lakes.  We will fish shore when windy or from boats when the weather allows us. All necessary equipment including bait, and a single day fishing license is provided.   Let us know ahead of time if you would like to give walleye fishing a try!
