Early Season:  This is a great time to visit the Double P.  The longer days and warmer temperatures allow our guests to experience more than pheasant hunting during their visit to South Dakota.  September marks the beginning of the fall migration, including doves and geese.  It is also the time when lakes turn over and the walleye and perch bite wakes up from the summer doldrums. It’s a perfect time to introduce a beginning sportsman to the outdoors.

South Dakota Upland Hunting: Pheasant hunting during the early season occurs on the preserve area of the ranch.  Our guests are allowed to shoot three pheasants and a partridge per day, with the option of shooting additional birds if desired.  Hungarian partridge hunting starts the second Saturday in September.

South Dakota Canada Goose Hunting:  Superior (Giant) Canada geese are hunted at this time.  These are the largest Canada goose subspecies, the adults average 10-14 lbs.  The early season limit has been as many as 15 per day.  Although there are days when limits or near limits are shot, a more reasonable expectation is to shoot 2-4 per hunter on a good morning in the field.

South Dakota Dove Hunting:  Double P dedicates over 100 acres to just dove fields.  The thousands of cedars, juniper, and Russian olive trees attract hundreds of pairs of nesting doves to the Double P.  The robust tree plantings of the Double P provide protected nesting cover that allows the doves to produce multiple broods within a single season.

Double P guests are provided a dove hunting kit and placed in one of our many manicured dove fields.  Hunting doves in the evening is a great way to finish your day as you witness the seemingly endless migrations of birds against the backdrop of a majestic South Dakota prairie sunset.

South Dakota Walleye and Perch Fishing:  The Double P is located on the western edge of the Glacial Lakes region of South Dakota.  We are fortunate to have dozens of lakes minutes from our lodge.  We include a day of fishing (license included) with our early season package.  We provide all necessary equipment including bait.  We will fish from boats when the weather allows us – the rumors of South Dakota being a windy state are indeed true.

*Goose licenses are not included in the package.  We encourage our guests to apply for the goose license online a minimum of two weeks prior to your trip.  This allows the licenses time to be mailed to the recipient.   It is possible to purchase licenses in South Dakota but requires a 40 mile trip to town.
